Danielle will teach us tips for buying an RV,organizing an RV, her thoughts on RV insurance and memberships, and tons more.
An RV is like any other vehicle, in that you must purchase insurance for it. I have seen many people not purchase the right kind of insurance for their RVs and end up losing thousands of dollars.
There are many factors to consider when choosing to purchase the correct type of RV insurance.
I recently read of a family who had their RV burglarized, where all of their possessions were stolen. The insurance company covered the RV itself, but only wanted to give them $2,000 for their stolen property.
Could you replace everything inside for $2,000? TVs, appliances, clothes, computers and more? Definitely not!
This is one of the many reasons why you need to ensure you have the right coverage.
Here are a few things to consider:
Are you living in it full time or just a weekender?
This is an enormous consideration if you are living full time like us. You must have full time insurance. Many RV companies don’t have full-timer RV insurance, so you must check insurance companies carefully.
We went through USAA who uses Progressive to obtain our full time RV insurance. Other companies used by full-time RVers include: Blue Sky RV and Good Sam Insurance.
Considering the fact that your RV is essentially your house and contains all of your possessions, you need the correct insurance coverage.
If you are not full-timing, you need to critically assess how much you will be using your RV, and make sure your insurance covers you adequately. Another consideration: make sure your RV is insured whether it is being used, or kept in storage.
Insure the RV’s contents as well.
Make sure your insurance covers the contents inside of your RV. Some RV insurance covers a standard $2,000 because they only plan on you using it for vacations.
If you are full-timing or taking more than $2,000 of stuff with you, (if you take 2 lap tops that’s your $2,000 right there!) make sure you have coverage for more then you need. It’s always better to pay for more insurance then you need, as it will cost you $10 or less a month more.
If you did in fact have an event, you would be able to replace everything your lost or stolen possessions.
Insure more then you need not less.
When covering the inside contents of your RV, you need to cover more than what you think your possessions are worth.
Covering $1,000 – $2,000 more than you think you have in the RV will cost you less than $5 a month, and can make sure you are able to replace everything you lose.
Make sure you tell the truth!
Whatever you do, do not lie about your RV.
If you are living in your RV full-time and your current insurance company doesn’t cover full-timing, do not lie and say you are only weekending.
IF anything ever happens, you will not even be able to cover 1/8 th of the contents.
Be honest and if the insurance company doesn’t have a plan for you move, on to the next company.
While finding just the right RV insurance is a hassle, you’ll be thankful you’ve chosen wisely if you ever need it!
Who did you choose as your RV insurance company?
