Regardless of which way you slice it, the internet is both a beauty and a beast.
As a homeschool mom, a blogger, and a writer, I am incredibly grateful for easy access to thought-provoking articles, free printables and lesson plans, and just oodles of other helpful tips! Google and I are good friends.
But I must learn to manage this all as well.
We all need to tame the urge to compare when eye-catching pictures of perfection tease us via Pinterest, Facebook, or Instagram. It’s no one’s fault of course, and even if you take away the internet…
…the same temptation exists somewhere in our lives.
I’ll be honest enough to admit that many years ago, I longed for a Pottery Barn look-alike schoolroom right smack in the middle of my home. Really, it’s true.
I was tired of “kitchen table homeschooling” with everything else stuffed into a closet or onto a small bookshelf.
The more I saw online or in real life about homeschool rooms, homeschool setups, and homeschool spaces, the more discontent I became. Again, I really don’t believe it’s anyone’s fault.
My attitude needed adjusting, but I couldn’t see it.
I was too busy longing for and wanting something I didn’t have. Ever been there? Of course we all have at some point or another – homeschooling or otherwise.
I’m not sure who out there needs this message today, but let me encourage you:
The only homeschool room you need is in your heart.
Yes, it IS really nice to have a spot, a space, a room for books, curriculum, and projects.
I actually think it’s helpful to not have every room in my home looking like a textbook exploded into living color on my walls! I appreciate our various spaces inside and outside for homeschooling.
But if your situation isn’t exactly as you’d like — keep homeschooling anyway.
I remember seasons of small, crowded homeschooling spaces that doubled up as the kitchen, the eating area, the scrapbooking table, the science experiment table…you get the idea.
But it doesn’t matter if we have all the space, all the room, and everything set up beautifully if our hearts are in the wrong place.
Remember that little verse from the account of David?
…”For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” I Samuel 16:7
I know it’s referencing physical appearance here, but the principle can apply to any area of life.
Your success in homeschooling your children is not based on an awesome setup in your home, the perfect curriculum, or owning any particular educational materials. These are tools – and can be really helpful and useful.
What is critical to pleasing God with our efforts is the condition of our HEART ATTITUDE, not our home arrangement.
: :
If you’re battling any discontentment, take comfort, God has already provided a way out.
Simply ask Him to forgive you, remove the weight, and replace it with his peace. As many times as you need to, there’s no limit.
And keep homeschooling anyway…
Grace.
