How to Save on Fabric
Joann Fabrics is notorious for sales. I’ve seen these map panels on sale three times so far – twice for 30% off and once for 40% off. They also offer coupons regularly through the mail, cell phone app, newspaper, and at cash registers for 40% off. The best deal is when these panels go on sale because then you can combine the sale with the teacher’s 15% off discount. For the teacher’s discount you can use your HSLDA ID or other teacher ID (get a free ID at Homeschool Buyers Co-op). If you’re just in a rush full retail per panel is 7.99 so still a good deal at full retail.
Joann’s has two maps, a world map and a US map – they are different sizes so the beginning sewer probably wouldn’t want to attempt adding panels to quilt or sew them together.

For the world map I bought 2 yards of “value” fabric (solid colors) from Walmart. For the US map I bought 1.5 yards. I had extra fabric but I used the extra to cut into strips as scarves for my toddler to play dressup with (bonus!)

Simple Sewing
It really could get fancy but doesn’t have to. Experienced quilters could add a whole bunch of steps but for me for something fast, easy, and to keep the fabric from fraying and still be thin enough to thumbtack to the wall – turn the fabrics right side facing and sew them together leaving a few inches open to turn it (also where having extra fabric was handy because I didn’t even take the time to pin them carefully together).

That’s it, simple as that. And having the ability to get hands on with the maps is a big plus in my book. My 18 month old can point out where we are on the US map after just a few “play” sessions on the map blankets!

These are great! I actually have been using the USA map for a couple of years (I backed it with fleece and it makes a great extra blanket in the living room!) and a few months ago I bought the world map but have yet to get it out of my fabric box. Add in one of those stuffed fabric world globes and you have a great geography resource – or a great place to take a nap!
