Summer will quickly be here and it’s time to start planning how to keep the kids motivated to read! A great way to encourage summer reading is by participating in one or more of the numerous free summer reading programs being offered this year. We’ve compiled a list to help you pick out the best fit for your family.
Below you’ll find a brief description of each reading program. Click on the link to find the full details for each one. Let’s get started!
Local Public Library – This is always a family favorite in our house with lots of great freebies!
Barnes & Noble – Read 8 Books, log them in your journal, and receive a free book
Half Price Books – Read 300 minutes in a month and receive a $5 gift certificate to Half Price Books.
iVillage – Four week reading challenge with free games, printables, and chances to win prizes.
Scholastic – Log the minutes your child reads online and they have a chance to win prizes.
Book Adventures by Sylvan Learning – Find a book to read from their site and then take an online quiz to earn points to use toward prizes.

TD Bank – Earn $10 in a new or existing Young Saver’s account when you read 10 books and take it to your local TD Bank.

H.E.Buddy Summer Reading Program http://www.hebuddy.com/
We have done this for a few years and they send out really nice prizes! We have received tshirts, pencils, bookmarks etc.
Another free site that we use year round is http://bookadventure.com. This site actually has quizzes and such just like the AR Program used in public schools so it tests the child’s comprehension, as well.
Six Flags Read to Succeed is a great motivator for my girls! The time for reading is ususlly the month of February, but then you can use the tickets in the summer months 🙂
