Learning about compound words can be fun for little readers. These free compound word activities will be great for practicing with your child.
Compound words are just two smaller words that come together to make a whole new word. For example, “butter” and “fly” become “butterfly.”
Mastering compound word skills is an important stepping stone in learning to read. Success in this area builds confidence and helps reduce anxiety over larger words.
To get started with the clip game, print the pages and laminate them or use cardstock. This will help the pages hold up as they are used during the activity.
You will need a small clothespin or another type of clip.
Separate all of the cards so that you have one large block and three smaller blocks underneath.
First, invite your child to identify the objects in the large block.
Next, have them determine which of the lower objects represents the new word. They will place a clip on the picture they choose.
Printable worksheets are included to review breaking down compound words. You’ll also find a word search and recognition printables for additional practice.
