To make use of these butterfly garden activities, you will need access to a flower garden. This can be as small as a window box of flowers on the porch or as large as a full-sized flower bed in the backyard.
If you don’t have a flower garden at home, you can also take these activities to a butterfly conservation garden or a park to enjoy in spring or summer.
Butterfly and Caterpillar Observation Worksheet – Print out this page to let kids practice their observations and descriptions of creatures in the garden.
The page has blank butterflies and caterpillars for kids to color in and room below each picture for them to describe how they look and behave.
Then, help them identify each butterflies and caterpillar that they colored in, and write the names of each below the pictures.
Garden Journal Page – With this page, you can help the little ones get more involved in caring for the butterfly garden.
Each week, print out the garden journal page and pin it on the fridge or put it in a binder. With the kids, check off which plants you water each day, your goals for the garden, and your observations.
Your observations can include how the plants are doing and how the seasons are changing them. Also, any wildlife, such as pollinators and birds, that you see visiting the garden.
These activities will help foster appreciation for flowers and the valuable pollinators that contribute to our environment.
