Sometimes it’s okay to feed your kids creme puffs for breakfast.
I’m serious. I haven’t had my mom’s creme puffs filled with warm custard and topped with the perfect chocolate sauce for ten years. When she made them for us a couple weeks ago during our first visit to her home in two years, we all enjoyed our late night snack immensely.
The next morning, we were discussing breakfast options with my four-year-old, Peter. “Do you want Neena to make muffins?” my mom asked.
“I thought we would have creme puffs for breakfast,” Peter responded without missing a beat. He had clearly been giving his breakfast plans some thought.
My mom and I agreed without hesitation. After all, what are the chances we will have creme puffs available for breakfast again any time soon? It’s a very special treat, and we had quite a few left over anyway. It’s certainly not the most nutritional breakfast my kids will ever eat, but again – these amazing goodies don’t come our way very often. They will still eat oatmeal tomorrow, because most days oatmeal or cereal is what we have.
These rare moments — special, spontaneous moments that we share together help to define us as a family and forge a bond my children will remember long after my mom and I are with Jesus.
Sometimes as moms we think we need to keep our children towing the line all day every day. Always eating whole wheat bread, low sugar and all-natural snacks. Always making the bed and wearing day clothes during the day and pajamas at night. Always putting away the toys in the right bucket and the clothes in the hamper before bed. Wanting and pushing to get all our ducks in a row, even though perfection is not really achievable or even desirable.
Sometimes letting go and changing the routine is the perfect way to make our days together special.
My mom used to declare random weekend nights as “Donut Nights.” She would convince us all to clean up the house while she mixed up the dough. Then we would invite the neighbors and friends and we would all feast on homemade donuts for supper. It was a celebration of family and friends I will never forget.
My Dad was equally skilled. Once every six months or so, he would surprise us with a trip to Dairy Queen after Sunday night church. My sister loves to randomly proclaim “Pajama Day” with her kids during the summer or on a Saturday. She might only do pajama days three or four times a year, but her kids LOVE pajama days!
I think a healthy breakfast is super important, but the occasional creme puff for breakfast is important too! Trust me, these extra-special, rule-breaking moments are not going to ruin your children forever. Rather, you will be making memories to last a lifetime. I know, because I treasure these special memories I have of my parents creating rare moments to treasure in the middle of ordinary days.
What are the Special Memories your family most enjoys?

You can’t describe such a scrumptious treat without sharing the recipe! lol. Your article was a good reminder to create and savor special moments, even if they aren’t “perfect.”
My kids love “Pajama Day” too…. and “Snack-y lunches” and curling up in my bed with popcorn and Netflix movies…. I try to do something special once a month or so with each child but sometimes it’s a group thing! Like popsicles for no reason.
I LOVED that morning with Creme Puffs for breakfast! Good thinking, Peter!
Oh Rachel! Did you notice in my post that I imply that we never get Cream Puffs unless we are with my Mom? That’s because the first two times I tried to make them on my own, I failed miserably. I think that’s why it never occurred to me to include the recipe! I watched my Mom really closely this time though, so I will talk to Mom, get the recipe ironed out, and put a post up on my personal blog with the printable recipe.
