This Summer I started the task of educating myself on cloth diapers. I was intrigued by the idea of never having to buy diapers again. However, I didn’t know where to start. I was overwhelmed by the types, brands, prices, and reviews. I just knew I didn’t want to use diaper pins and plastic pants, a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g but THAT.
I eventually settled on the easiest system I could find called “All-In-One” (AIO for short, now that I’m in-the-know with the lingo). Like anything, I found we could spend as much money as we’d like on these diapers. The designer brands could easily be $250 for 12. After much searching I finally settled on a brand called “SunBaby,” which I bought 20 AIO dipes/20 inserts for $82 w/ free shipping.
I’ve posted some of these pictures before.

With Liam Joseph’s birth right around the corner, I started to think about building up our diaper supplies. With the 20 that we bought for Gabriel (BTW, they fit size 7-35 .lbs) I thought we needed about 20 more. Now, onto my latest advancement in cloth diapering.
Remember those diaper pins and plastic pants I didn’t want to ever use?
I love how the thing I gag at the thought of becomes what I love. (Gee, this was also how the Lord led me to homeschooling, among other things…) Surprise, surprise, while at Wal-mart last month I saw they had cloth diaper supplies out. You know, the prefold diapers (padded and unpadded), plastic pants and (eeeeeek!) diaper pins. I’ve read bad reviews online and heard from friends that the GERBER brand of cloth diapers is not good for anything other than a burp rag. However, these were the CARTER’S brand and cheap enough, only $6 for a 6 pack. Certainly in my budget to make it worth a try. I started with 12 diapers that I was going to give a try as our back-up’s for washing days.

The diapers I have fallen in love with! What is pictured cost $6 for one 4-pack of plastic pants, $6 for the 6-pack of padded cloth dipes and $1 for a 4-pack of diaper pins. |
My “back-ups” have become my main stays now! The stack of 20 “easy” AIO diapers have been sitting idly by. Maybe it’s because, by nature of the personality the Lord has given me, I like a challenge. These “old fashion” style dipes take approx. 1 minute longer to apply than an AIO or disposable. They work so wonderfully that my collection had grown to 48 (I may have an addiction, wink.) I wash them the same as I did my other diapers (post on my washing system coming soon.) I may find the AIO dipes easier for a newborn. I may go through seasons where the ‘ol fashion system takes it’s turn sitting on the shelf. However, I admit it, I’ve fallen hard for a tall tower of white cloth diapers, plastic pants and diaper pins.
