This past weekend my family and I attended the 30th annual Home Educators Association of Virginia Convention. This is our state homeschool convention and it is one of the oldest in the country. One of my favorite parts of the convention is the HUGE used curriculum sale.
I don’t generally do a lot of traditional curriculum, but we use a lot of living books in our daily learning. My favorite place in the world to pick up great books is the thrift store. I have found so many great classics between The Good Will and the Salvation Army. My next favorite place though is this used curriculum sale. I took my “used book cash envelope” with my cash savings for used book purchases and shopped guilt free!
Here are three of my favorites that I snagged for under $7!
For Instruction in Righteousness: A Topical Reference Guide for Biblical Child-Training this book is valued at $36.00. I picked it up for $5! You can also find it on the Doorposts site.
Monarch Butterflies: Mysterious Travelers – I picked up a copy for us for $1. We’ve checked this book out of the library several times.
Home Educating with Confidence – This book is by my friend and FHD sponsor Maryilynn Boyer. I was able to get my copy for $1.50. You can also find it on the Character Concepts website.
Here are several of the chapter books that I picked up. I paid $0.75 for most, up to $1.50 for a few. The Princess Treasury book was Naomi’s pick. She found that for $1.00!
My list of chapter books
Ben Franklin of Old Philadelphia
Left Behind – The Kids Collection
I picked up more books than these listed. You can see that we collected a stroller full! I shared the picture of my busting full box on Instagram. <<– that’s a hint. You can follow me on Instagram. I’ll share with you pictures of kids, food, and homeschool life, all. day. long.
What great deals on used curriculum and books have you picked up lately?

I went to this convention, too! It was my first time, but definitely won’t be my last. : )
It was amazing! We always have a great time there 🙂
I was also at the Virginia convention. I picked up quite a bit. This was my first time and I loved it. I was able to purchase the following:
Math-U-See Gamma
Shurley English 3rd
Daily writing prompts
Books with the teacher guide for the book study:
Charlotte’s Web
Secret Garden
also some random books that my kids would just enjoy
I was there! This was our 3rd year and I just love that convention! I also saw the Instructions in Righteousness book, I think it was the same one, and almost bought it!!! Wish I could have met you while there!
Holy Moses! You really racked up some great stuff!!! That is awesome!!
We might have had a race to the book, Alyssa! 😉 It would have been nice to meet you. I’m sure we’ll be there next year, too.
Wow, that’s a lot of books. Number the Stars is one of my absolute favorite books. I’m going to a book fair this Saturday; I’m very excited. I loooove books, and cheap books are great. I can’t wait to see what I find!
We haven’t read Number the Stars yet, Molly. Our oldest son is passionate about WWII history, so naturally the entire family is studying all we can with him. We’ll read it soon! Good luck at your book fair.
I was there, too! I didn’t even plan on going to the UCS but something drew me in there. We are moving soon and I didn’t want to buy curriculum yet, so why go to the UCS? But there was so much more! I did get some of our curriculum but only because it was such a good deal. I got my boys some great books and a Beth Moore study for me. I also hit some good sales in the exhibit hall, especially Zondervan and Apologia. But, no curriculum. This was a lot of books for me and my boys to enjoy. I paid around $12 for the Boyers’ book in the exhibit hall, fyi. 🙂
I would have paid $12 for the Boyer’s book, too. They’re wonderful!
I go the the local mission’s, garage sales, & the Good Will but my favorite place to get books is our library’s book sale they have all kids books for 3 for $0.25! I also donate a bunch of the books we buy back to the mission for others as well.
I want to read Jacob’s Rescue! And I love Number the Stars and Left Behind!
Great finds!
