Pancakes? Really? You pulled your kids out of school over pancakes? That’s a bit odd, don’t you think?
Obviously pancakes are not the only reason we homeschool but, YES! It is a bit odd but hear me out. My kids had to be at school by 8:00am every day. Breakfast was a mad rush of me trying to get something healthy into them while they frantically shoveled food in their mouths on their way out the door. Pancakes were out of the question unless I made them the night before or woke up at the crack of dawn.
For six years this was our life. Rushed breakfasts, hours of homework, and a lot of frustration. It got worse as the years went on. When we made the decision to homeschool, I couldn’t help but smile because I knew I would get breakfast time back!
We just finished up our first homeschool year. We enjoyed many leisurely pancake breakfasts this year. Lots of time to sleep a little longer and just sit at the table and talk about our day. We were able to open the Word and talk about God. We just had time!
Homeschooling changed the tone of my home. We went from that frantic, rushed family to much more low-key. I’m not saying that it was all roses and butterflies, because we definitely had our peaks and valleys, but being able to have breakfast in the morning really helped us connect.
I’ve gathered some of our favorite pancake recipes as well as some from fellow bloggers.

Too funny! And oh so true =) Love slowing down!
Beth
Thank you for that reminder…..I have one child left for schooling and I want to make those memories last forever….and over pancakes.
I agree with everything…. For us trying to get 5 kids off to school (and to 2 different schools) and a baby to deal with was so hectic for us. Hubby had to be to work early so that left it all on my shoulders!!! Forget healthy breakfast though, sadly it was cold cereal for my kiddos most mornings. Now that we have brought them all home to learn we have been able to slow down and enjoy our mornings and each other!! This morning it was pancakes from scratch made by my 11 almost 12 year old daughter…. 😀 I would never trade this!!!!!
lol, i always tell people that the reason i homeschool is because i’m too lazy to get everyone to the bus stop on time!
uh, SOOOOO not true by the way. we are not lazy ’round here and we make it to our homeschool group class day on time… or early…. with only one or two exceptions a year. nd those are usually a dirty diaper explosion or something equally unplannable.
gotta try the pancakes though.
What a difference pancakes make!
Yum! Thanks for sharing these recipes 🙂 We had waffles with strawberries, whipped cream & chocolate syrup for lunch the other day – waffles & pancakes are always a treat.
This is one of the reasons we homeschool. I hated how rushed and crabby we all were in the morning when they went to public school. I hated dropping them off having just yelled at them minutes ago to hurry up. Now we take our time in the morning and enjoy each other before we start our lessons.
This is so funny! My son ate pancakes everyday for the first year we homeschooled. He didn’t like to experiment, though – Bisquick buttermilk pancakes with New Hampshire maple syrup… over and over and over again!
When we started up after summer break the 2nd year, he said, ‘Mom, do all homeschool kids eat pancakes for breakfast?” LOL! Then he asked, “Could I have a different kind this year? I’m older now, you know!”
He then ate Chocolate chip or Blueberry pancakes for the whole year.
I say, whatever it takes to get the day started well and with smiles!!
Thanks for sharing the recipes! We will have to try a few this year!
Happy First Day of School, Y’all!!
I’m glad you said it because this is EXACTLY one of the pros on our list of why we homeschool our daughter! LOL
The frantic rush is exactly why I have decided to homeschool as well. Looking forward to not having to shove down food in the car rushing from one place to another – and not having to spend the precious few moments we have at home doing homework. I wish everyone had the luxury of the one on one teaching and connection we get with our kids when we pull them out of the system.
I love it! We are still contemplating homeschooling, but I love where your values are! Good nutrition and the Lord are my two top priorities. I have twins who are two right now, which is such a handful, but we are prayerfully going to see where the Lord guides us in schooling! Thanks for this post! LOVE <3
I felt like I could’ve written this! =) This is our first year homeschooling and I *love* that we aren’t under that constant “hurry” that we have been for the past 7 years — “hurry and get up! hurry and eat breakfast!….get dressed!…get to the car!….eat your dinner!…get in the shower!…get to bed so you can get up for school!” No more rushing every minute – we get to actually take time to enjoy each other, the Lord – and pancakes! =)

p.s. this is our favorite pancake recipe – especially in the summer when zucchini is abundant! http://supersavingsblog.blogspot.com/2013/07/zucchini-pancakes-easy-and-healthy.html
Exactly! It’s not necessarily the pancakes (but they certainly help :-)). It’s the slow and intentional lifestyle that comes with homeschooling. Starting the day slow, talking, bonding and getting into Gods Word is the only way, IMHO, to begin a day. I truly believe it is Gods plan for my family. I homeschool 3 children (3, 5, 7) and I have since day 1. At these ages it’s about character training and I know sending my children to school would not be conducive to this. Please don’t think I’m saying its not possible, because it is for some, but for my personality, which does not do well under pressure or in chaotic situations, I know my family would not be able to connect well under those circumstances. I believe God has a different plan for every family and ours is the slow and intentional lifestyle of homeschooling (with lots of pancake breakfasts :-))!
Oh, here are our favorite pancakes, with pure maple syrup and mini chocolate chips of course! http://www.skinnytaste.com/2009/06/whole-wheat-pancakes.html
